What is a coach? Differences with the psychologist

What is a coach? The word coach means “coach”. He is a person who was trained to motivate and provide techniques for someone to achieve the goals they have set.

If we focus on the role of a football manager, he helps players to increase their skills. What seems important to us to analyze is: can a coach make a person who knows how to play football shine, can he develop the skills he already has, but can he do something for someone who does not play well?

The same could happen when you have a problem; if a person has the tools to reach a goal, a coach can help him to improve, to use effectively the potential he possesses, but if this person does not have the necessary tools or does not believe in himself, a coach will not be a complete figure like a psychologist who has carried out a deeper study of the mind.

This is not meant to undermine coaching at all, as there are very professional coaches who have a gift in helping and coaching people; each person has to look for the best path based on the problem they have.

The importance of knowing what a coach is

A coach is a good option when you are fine but tired and don’t know how to achieve your goals. It will be an  equal relationship, in which it is clear what happens to us, the goal we want to reach and that we need someone to guide us, accompany us and motivate us, but we must not expect this person to clarify our existential doubts or resolve our emotional conflicts. A coach focuses on the present and how to use your resources more efficiently and effectively.

A psychologist will be your choice when you are not well, when your emotions take over and your health is affected in some way. A psychologist will investigate your mind in order to improve you and help you get to know yourself better. It is difficult to explain the work done by a psychologist because there are multiple currents. Who focuses on the past, who on the present and who on both. There are also those who, in addition to being a psychologist, trained as a coach.

It will be a relationship of authority, in which you are not only looking for someone to train you to improve you, but also to help you get to know yourself better and solve your problems.

Things to take into account:  the number of people who dedicate themselves to coaching services has increased significantly in recent years; if you opt for a coach, make sure that he has the necessary training to practice, many pretend to be coaches, when, in reality, they have very little training, but they see an open door to this service in order to increase their income, offering a poor quality service.

Having a clear understanding of what a coach is will help you identify and differentiate professionals. If you opt for a psychologist, be  careful and check that he is in possession of the qualification, that he has extensive experience and that, in addition to university, he was subsequently trained with courses or masters, because a degree in psychology is very general, therefore, further training is required later to specialize in a specific branch.
